I started this project on a whim, finished it in one day and was thrilled with how beautifully it turned out! I had to share it! I hope this gives you some guidelines and ideas and inspires you to try something similar!
THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
An old chair with no seat
Paint & paint brush
Chicken wire
Staple gun
Scissors
Planter liner
Potting soil
Flowers and greenery for planting
The first thing I did was paint the chair white. I didn’t bother sanding or priming because, it will be sitting outside anyway. I wanted the chair to have a very weathered, old look to it. I painted a decent layer of paint but, I wasn’t too careful about the coverage. I went back over a few of the spots with a second layer and that was that!
The next part was the trickiest. I cut a piece of chicken wire to fit my chair. I measured it extra big to be safe. The chicken wire wasn’t super hard to work with but, it wasn’t easy to work with either. I shaped the cut piece of chicken wire how I wanted it. I began to mold it into the shape of a planter. I made my planter as deep a I possibly could.
Next, I used my scissors to cut off the excess wire. Then, I stapled it into place. I made sure to keep all of the staples on the inside of the chair so, you wouldn’t see them once the flowers were planted.
NOTE: when working with the chicken wire, be careful of getting scratched! I was not and my arm looked like I had been in a cat fight afterwards! ?
The next step is optional but, I love how it turned out! I wanted my chair to have a worn and weathered look to it. I achieved this by sanding off some of the paint. I just used a small piece of medium grit sand paper and got to work.
Once that was done, I added in my planter liners. I started by pulling them apart. Next, I placed them into my planter, doing my best to fill in all of the gaps!
NOTE: I used 2 medium sized planter liners however, I think 3 would have been so much better. I still had quite a few gaps on the sides.
When you are finished your chair should look like this!
Now, its time for the fun part! First, I filled my planter two thirds the way up with potting soil. I just used a regular potting soil! Then, it was time to add the flowers! I chose to plant a Poppy flower (for a “pop” of color), Lavender (to add some height and scent), Coreopsis Zagreb (to fill in all the gaps), and Creeping Jenny around the edges (to add some spill!)
I’m really curious to see how my plants fill in over the summer. I also plan on needing to trim them down next season. I chose to plant all perennials so, I can have this planter for the summers to come! I also chose flowers that can be cut and brought inside to display in a vase! Score! ?? It’s like having your own personal florist right outside your front door!
I hope you enjoyed this little DIY project! It was simple and pretty inexpensive with, an amazing outcome. I even found my old chair at a Goodwill store for a couple bucks! If you decide to try this out, be sure to share a photo on social media! Im so excited to see what you come up with!
Here are a few more sweet photos!
